Midwife is BBC's biggest new drama since 2001

Final episode viewing figures have led the BBC to describe Call the Midwife its most successful new drama series since 2001.

More than 9.2 million viewers watched the episode on Sunday night, which featured the marriage of Miranda Hart's character Chummy to PC Noakes.

Jessica Raine played the lead character, Jenny, in the series based on the memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth.

Her books recalled her work and life in the East End of London as a midwife in the 1950s.

BBC One controller Danny Cohen told BBC News: "It's been wonderful to see viewers respond so warmly - and in such large numbers - to this world of babies, nuns and extraordinary women."

Call the Midwife has been recommissioned and will return to the BBC in 2013.
